Cane Spirit and Vodka

 

  1. Definitions:

    Cane spirit and vodka shall be manufactured from ethyl alcohol (95% v/v minimum), of not less than the
    British Pharmacopoeia Standard, and diluted with water to give a finished product with an alcohol content of not less than 40% by volume, or 33.4% by weight.

  2. Appearance, odor and flavor:

    Cane spirit and vodka shall be clear liquids, free of sediment, completely miscible in water in all proportions, and free from bitter or objectionable flavors, or objectionable odors of any kind.
    Cane spirit and vodka shall be free of dirt and foreign matter and substances injurious to health.

  3. Chemical requirements:

    (a) Water used in the manufacture of cane spirit and vodka shall meet the requirements of Class B of S.A.B.S. Standard 241 ("Water for domestic supplies").

    (b) The total solids content of cane spirit and vodka shall not exceed 0.15% by weight (1500 p.p.m).

    (c) The copper content of cane spirit and vodka shall not exceed 10 parts per million.

  4. Additives:

    Glycerine, sucrose, dextrose, liquid glucose, invert sugar and approved botanicals shall be the only additives allowed in the manufacture of cane spirit and vodka.

    (a) Glycerine: The glycerine shall be of British Pharmacopoeia quality, and shall not exceed 1.25% by weight of the pure spirit.

    (b) Purity of sucrose: The sucrose shall comply with the physical, chemical and general microbiological requirements for canners' mill-white sugar, conforming to Standard SABS 420 ("Canners sucrose").

    (c) Purity of dextrose and liquid glucose: Dextrose and liquid glucose shall comply with the relevant physical, chemical and general microbiological requirements of Standard SABS 388 ("Commercial dextrose and liquid glucose").

    (d) Invert sugar: Invert sugar shall have been prepared from sucrose complying with the chemical and general microbiological requirements of canners' mill-white sugar conforming to Standard SABS 420 ("Canners' sucrose").
